In September, Vanguard ETFs overall recorded a mix of steady market performance, some volatility, and significant dividend distributions, with investors pouring substantial capital into its funds.
Stakeholders seemed to implement a strategy that heavily balanced broad U.S. equity exposure with a distinct pivot toward fixed-income stability.
Key Takeaways:
- VTI led Vanguard’s September inflows with over $5 billion in flows during the recent four-week period, while flagship VOO surprisingly missed the top eight list.
- Demand for yield and tax advantages pushed bond funds like VTEB and BND into top leaderboard spots.
- Strong flows into international (VXUS, VT) and tech (VGT) funds reflect a strategy balancing global diversification with targeted sector growth.
Vanguard’s flagship ETF VOO is the most popular fund in 2026. However, it did not make the list of its top eight most popular ETFs for September, based on each fund bringing in more than $1 billion in flows for the month. That distinction went to the Vanguard Morningstar Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), the Vanguard Tax-Exempt Bond ETF (VTEB), the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS), and the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND).
Rounding out the list for the bottom four are the Vanguard Total World Stock ETF (VT), the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT), the Vanguard 0-3 Month Treasury Bill ETF (VBIL), and the Vanguard Short-Term Tax-Exempt Bond ETF (VTES).
The Top 8
Leading the charge, VTI dominated in September, capturing a massive $5.08 billion in four-week flows and extending its year-to-date total past $48.7 billion, according to VettaFi data.
In second place, VTEB pulled in nearly $2.39 billion over the four-week period. Additionally, it saw $866.6 million in one-week flows and $9.62 billion in 2026 so far. VXUS secured the third spot, disrupting U.S. market dominance by attracting $2.23 billion from investors seeking broader valuation opportunities abroad.
The flagship fund BND was in fourth place, capturing $2.21 billion, pointing to a strong investor demand to lock in yields.
Offering global exposure, VT was the fifth most popular Vanguard ETF in September. It brought in $1.28 billion over the four-week timeframe. The fund has seen over $737 million in one-week inflows and $13.95 billion year-to-date.
The tech-focused VGT secured the number-six position. It gathered $1.21 billion for the month and saw short-term one-week flows reaching $590.07 million. Its year-to-date flows sit at $4.14 billion.
VBIL, an ultra-short duration Treasury fund, came in at number seven, with four-week fund flows of $1.15 billion. Additionally, it recorded $414.34 million in one-week flows and sits at $7.85 billion for year-to-date flows.
Rounding out the top eight, VTES captured just over $1 billion for the month. It also saw a modest $196.79 million in one-week flows and a YTD total of $1.83 billion.
